Surmountable: How Citizens from Selma to Seoul Changed the World, published in 2021, was a joint endeavor between co-authors Brian Gruber and Adam Monier Edwards over nearly three years. Adam was born and raised in Washington, Pennsylvania – home to one of the nation’s earliest protests, the Whiskey Rebellion (1791-1794). He devised the original concept after becoming disillusioned by the passion that demonstrators put into their marches outside his New York City window when they failed to see any substantial political change. The Surmountable name came to him after months of mutual brainstorming with Brian while researching movements and developing hypotheses that formed the backbone of the work. Brian challenged assertions and clarified the objective, leading to the unified vision now found in the book. Together, they launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund Brian’s travel by securing $15,000 from over 80 backers. He then traveled to 15 cities in four continents to interview over 40 activists, theorists, historians, and ordinary passersby, and ultimately wrote the majority of the content.
